Wrapped in fine printed silk papers, oranges cross borders and transform into both products and narrative supports. The images they convey transmit, through accumulation, a modern mythology of the orange, from its biological and mythical origins to its globalization, including its agriculture, transport, and consumption.
By juxtaposing compositions of citrus papers with a montage of interviews from current stakeholders in the 'orange industry,' this graphic essay highlights some of the economic, social, and geopolitical issues concealed by these wrappings. It thus reveals the tensions between our modern imagination of fruit consumption and the contemporary reality of its trade.
This graphic essay is the result of a research and creation residency by the graphic design duo Rovo (Sébastien Dégeilh and Gaëlle Sandré), focusing on the fruit paper collection of the Miam (International Museum of Modest Arts, Sète), particularly the collection of painter Pascal Casson. This montage of images and voices arises from the observation of this collection and a series of interviews conducted in the spring of 2024 with various local citrus industry stakeholders, who were presented with a selection of these wrappings. From the intertwining of their words in this specific context emerges a fictional dialogue where numerous subjective and personal viewpoints collide, forming a plural perspective on our orange consumption.
Initially published in the catalog Superbemarché, citrus paper & co [co-published by Miam/La fenêtre/Trèfle, 2025], this research also led to the eponymous exhibition, curated by Rovo, Françoise Adamsbaum, and Gaëlle Maury, at Miam, Sète, from April 11, 2025, to March 8, 2026.
