Kim Jong Il Looking at Things
Author: João Rocha
Publisher: JBE Books
Kim Jong Il Looking at Things is one of the most followed, shared, and imitated single-theme Tumblr blogs in recent years. An uninterrupted series of photographs of the North Korean Dear Leader looking at things, this collection fascinates with its formal rigor and the intensity of the imaginaries it conveys.
Without detracting from the primary function of these photographs - to elevate Kim Jong Il to the status of an icon - this series shifts the subject and stakes of propaganda. The icon becomes taxonomy, the viewer is viewed, and the meaning of the images continually eludes.
Accompanied by an unpublished essay by Marco Bohr titled Watching Kim Jong Il Look at Things, the book reveals the mechanisms of our fascination with these images accumulated on the Internet - these memes - by analyzing how a series of seemingly innocent photographs becomes viral and appealing.
By publishing Kim Jong Il Looking at Things in its collection FOLLOW ME, Collecting Images Today, Jean Boîte Édition continues to highlight another artistic scene, which establishes the online collector as a creator and anchors the ephemeral in the perennial.
