AUTOPORTRAITS (1963-2013)

Author: Bernard Plossu

Publisher: Éditions Marval / Rue Visconti

What is a self-portrait? A memory of a specific moment in time, or a vain recollection? In any case, to dare this exercise in style, one must feel the need to preserve the trace of a place or a fraction of a second that mattered, and above all, accept one's own self-mockery! Self-portraits allow us to better retrace moments in time, in the inexorable unfolding of time that only moves towards one goal: its end. Might as well keep some memories of it!

Bernard Plossu

Bernard Plossu agreed to engage in this challenging exercise: to exhume from his archives 'self-portrait' photographs that make sense, and to write, about each one, a text evoking their context and the memories associated with them. These self-portraits – from 1963 to 2012 – and the texts that accompany them, do not only speak of the passage of time but bear the imprint of his journeys, reveal his passions, and lift the veil on the practice, as well as more intimate moments, of this photographer-traveler, passionate walker, and curious observer. Through about thirty photographs, mostly unpublished, Bernard Plossu has 'taken his portrait': photographing his library, his beloved Nikkormat camera, his square shadow, his reflection... so many nods to tell, without taking himself too seriously, 50 years of career.
