TABLEAUX VIVANTS
Author: Gloria Friedmann
Publisher: Éditions Marval / Rue Visconti
During the year 1994, Gloria Friedmann created a series of performative works cataloged under the title The Representatives. Far from the tradition of performance art (where the artist usually takes center stage), far also from the primary motivations of the pioneers of performance art in the United States in the 1960s (Bruce Nauman or Vito Acconci make no secret of the appeal offered by a form of spontaneous, low-cost art), and finally, ahead of its time, considering the more recent developments in performance art where it is customary to hire 'actors' and where spectacular productions are not shunned, these 'Representatives' (also referred to by the broader term 'living pictures' – indicating their theoretical proximity to painting or theater) articulate in an architecturally designed space serving as a set, the restricted and choreographed action of animals or humans, and industrially produced objects. The intimate relationships these temporary and animated compositions maintain with the intention to discuss the very nature of contemporary images lie in what she herself said in 1994: 'The omnipresence of the media and their digital images often leads to such confusion that the reality of our world seems to coincide with these multiple woven images. Yet I am convinced that it is only a true confrontation with the material itself that allows us to grasp the image of our world, in order to reflect on it more deeply.'
