The Norwegian artist Per Barclay takes possession of particular places to create his 'Oil Chambers', emblematic installations of his work that are not necessarily intended to be exhibited. They are most often designed as shooting devices solely intended to create photographic images.

"[...] In general, an Oil Chamber is a form of installation, a place producing images, a place that is reminiscent of the two types of darkrooms known, the one used in photography and the one from the Baroque period described by Athanasius Kircher, called camera obscura. And photographing an Oil Chamber, to bear witness to this ephemeral installation, is to further extend the artist's work, like this book which also reflects these two artistic achievements. Photographing the inside of an Oil Chamber is also a way of photographing the inside of this camera, in the same way that one could imagine an eye inside the eye observing the formation of an image on the screen of the retina. There is, in the work itself, a kind of revelation, in the photographic sense, but also in the Baroque sense, of a technical and artistic process, that of the formation of an image by its very imaging.

These works by Per Barclay show both the product and the imaginary scenario of its production, the process and the result. The only difference between these two types of chambers and photography lies in the permanence of the image. Oil, unlike photographic emulsion, is unable to retain the image.

Hence the necessity of photographs, and of the book to disseminate them."
