JACQUES MONORY, PHOTOGRAPHE
Authors: Jacques Monory, Jean-Christophe Bailly
Publisher: Éditions Marval / Rue Visconti
Often, in the studio, while talking with Monory and watching him work, I was struck by the quality of the photographs he took and handled without particular care as mere materials. What became apparent to me was that there was a style to them, and the fact that they could be used as references in the preparation of a painting did not exhaust their meaning. From there, to gather them, separating them from their destiny as paintings as well as from the mass of documentary material of which they are only a part (Monory also using images found in the press or taken from cinema or television), it was only a step, and that is the one this book takes. But in making this material autonomous and suggesting that it can be viewed for its own sake, it is not about separating Monory from his own painting: Monory the photographer and Monory the painter are one and the same person, a single gaze, a single movement: from the click of the shutter, the painting is in view, whether the photograph actually taken ends up providing the substrate for a painting or not. However, if what one sees on the contact sheets or prints can and should be conceived as preparatory material and an archive of the painting, it turns out, and this is inherent to the photographic itself, that something else emerges: if Monory, through his photographs, primarily feeds the documentary style of his own approach, it happens that what he documents emancipates itself and acquires the value of a reportage that can be viewed as such.
