TROIS PETITS CANARDS, UNE EAU DE VIE

Authors: Lawrence Weiner, Luc Vezin

Publisher: Éditions Marval / Rue Visconti

Ten years after their first meeting in Calais, art critic Luc Vezin and conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner exchanged letters for three years, consisting of texts, photographs, drawings, and collages.

The subject of their conversation: What does it mean to be American? What does it mean to be French?

This book-conversation is conceived as a work of art, in which the two authors engage in dialogue through text and image.

Lawrence Weiner (1942–2021) was one of the founding figures of American conceptual art. His work involves using language and words as sculptural materials, inscribing large phrases or equations on museum walls.

Luc Vezin, meanwhile, is a French writer, historian, and art critic (he notably authored The Storyless Life of James Castle).

The book transcribes the correspondence between the two men. The approach is typical of conceptual art: playing with idioms, translation, and the physical materialization of words. We have taken this concept quite far for this deluxe limited edition, by literally providing "Three Little Ducks and a Brandy" in an art box.

The book (whether in its standard edition or its deluxe limited edition) is now archived in numerous leading museum libraries, such as that of the MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona).
