BEAU TEMPS CHAUD PROPICE À L'AMOUR

Authors: Annie Zadek, Valérie Mréjen

Publisher: Éditions Marval / Rue Visconti

In this artist's book(let) consisting of 37 detachable postcards, Annie Zadek has paired short phrases taken from her books with images from her collection, suggested by Valérie Mréjen. The writer and the visual artist play here with four hands to offer us a bewildering and cheerful 'photo-poem.'

"It happens that a sentence extracts itself from the text being written, demanding, by its evocative power and formal evidence, to be looked at as an autonomous mental image, as much as read in its context. For years and books, I have collected these fragments of dreams, these fleeting reminiscences, these strange and/or mundane scenes, these ungraspable views of the mind, for the sheer pleasure of catching these apparitions of reality on the fly and anchoring them in writing. Solicited a year ago, the publishing house Marval-rueVisconti immediately accepted the editorial welcome, as did Valérie Mréjen, the iconographic accompaniment in the form of postcards whose saturated coloring makes the most familiar landscapes exotic.

Yet, what is BEAU TEMPS CHAUD PROPICE A L'AMOUR the name of? "

Annie Zadek, January 2023

ANNIE ZADEK was born in Lyon, where she studied philosophy and aesthetics with the sole aim of becoming a writer. She lived and worked in this city until she moved to an old weaving mill in the Parc naturel régional du Pilat (Loire), where she tried to combine her commitment to contemporary literature with her environmentalist activism. After various writing residencies in her prenatal MittelEuropa (Germany, Russia, Czech Republic, Poland, Austria...) followed by a few years in Paris, she has been living and working in Normandy since 2021. Neither novel, nor theater, nor poetry, but all of these at once, for Annie Zadek, the text - is the first act, but it is no less the source of equally necessary metamorphoses: theatrical stagings, silkscreens, in situ graphic interventions, performance readings designed alone or with visual artists, experimental films...

VALÉRIE MRÉJEN was born in 1969 in Paris. Coming from an art school, she has been interested from the beginning in different means of expression to better explore the possibilities of language. She started by publishing artist's books before shooting her first videos. Her works have been the subject of numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, notably at the Jeu de Paume in 2008. She has made several short films and a feature film, En ville (Directors' Fortnight, Cannes 2011) as well as several theatrical stagings. Her books are published by Allia, P.O.L., and Manuella éditions. She is represented by the Anne-Sarah Bénichou gallery.
