Born in 1963 in Paris, Éric Fourmestraux lives and works in Paris and in his studio in Saint-Pierre-ès-Champs. He graduated from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. Raised outdoors and with ammonia in a small town in the Somme, he began, from a very young age, his first plan prints in his father's architectural office. Then finally, he draws, engraves, installs... Sometimes it's just a word, a sentence, an expression... a discovery around a corner, that gives birth to the beginnings of a work.
Beyond a phrase he plays with or an object he prints, it can also be a person or their memory, the memory of an artist or one of their works that nourishes his work. An attempt to pay tribute. And the tribute here is multiple, women, authors, who have marked their time with their literary work, their artistic and political commitment; they are born under the artist's pencil, drypoint or gouge. Faces that are not all familiar to us, but names that resonate as landmarks in the universe of ideas. Of what they wanted to tell us, only a few fragments, which refer us to their reading...
And it is these encounters, fortuitous or directed, that are the very essence of the work. The set of portraits and texts is designed in the form of an installation. An alphabet of women, only, to ward off the fact that he was taught, from elementary school, that 'the masculine takes precedence over the feminine'.
